GE 10 – BB📄[Reflection]: The Silliman University Motto
Central to the institution’s commitment to molding character and competence rooted in faith is the powerful line that further illustrates Silliman’s persevering devotedness to their cause and purpose – the guiding motto: Via, Veritas, Vita. This Latin phrase which translates to The Way, the Truth, and the Life originates as the acknowledgment of Jesus Christ in the New Testament as taken from John 14:6. To reflect, “Via” or “The Way,” is representative to a person’s acquisition of growth and they pave their own path in this world. It embodies one’s attempt to find their own sense of purpose and direction in life; an individual’s venture to seek themselves and their reason for being. On the other hand, “Veritas” or “The Truth,” constitutes the acquisition of ultimate knowledge and the attainment of absolute truth which both aim to uncover the deeper reasons and philosophies of our ‘being’ as we continually strive for excellence and unwavering virtue. Lastly, “Vita” or “The Life” encapsulates the holistic approach to nurturing, cultivating, and molding eager individuals into persons both for themselves and as active members of the community brought up to be zealous and morally steadfast. Truly, the Silliman pivotal motto weaves together all of the University’s aspirations and beliefs as it serves as one’s guide toward holistic growth and development.
