According to the video, the nephron, acting as the kidney’s functional unit, plays a vital role in blood filtration, regulation of blood composition, fluid balance maintenance, and waste product excretion. Consisting of the renal corpuscle and renal tubule, the nephron initiates by filtering blood in the glomerulus, allowing water, ions, and small molecules to enter the renal tubule. The proximal convoluted tubule then reabsorbs crucial substances like glucose, amino acids, and water. Simultaneously, the loop of Henle establishes a concentration gradient in the medulla. The distal convoluted tubule fine-tunes electrolyte balance, and the collecting duct concentrates urine before its expulsion from the body. Hormones like aldosterone and antidiuretic hormone play pivotal roles in regulating these processes, ensuring the nephron’s intricate functions contribute to maintaining the body’s homeostasis.
