The video below explains what Coronary Artery Disease is. This condition, which is also called CAD, is the most common heart disease in the US. This happens when the coronary arteries are having a hard time supplying enough blood, oxygen, and nutrients to the heart due to the presence of cholesterol deposits or plaques. These barriers basically narrow the arteries, causing a decrease in the flow of blood into the heart.

    • CAD can be a reason for shortness of breath, extreme fatigue, angina, and heart attack, which are also common symptoms of CAD. Since this takes time to develop, patients are usually unaware that they have CAD unless complications arise. It is important to note that anyone can possibly have CAD. Risk factors include genetics, age (especially with older people), gender (as men are more at risk), existing health conditions, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, being overweight, the lack of physical activities, extreme stress, unhealthy eating, and smoking. Treatments and preventive measures for CAD are reflected in one’s lifestyle, like opting for healthier food options. If medical interventions are needed, an example is the intake of beta-blockers or procedures like coronary artery bypass surgery.
