Data Quality
From past discussions, we have learned that data refers to unprocessed pieces of information, often in the form of facts, statistics, or values, that are collected, stored, and analyzed. Quality, on the other hand, generally refers to the degree of excellence or the extent to which something meets predefined standards, expectations, or specifications. It can be applied to various aspects of products, services, processes, or even data.
In the video below, data quality was defined as a measurement of a data set’s competence in fulfilling specific criteria and uses several factors to measure whether data is good or bad for a company’s purpose.
If we apply this in the context of clinical laboratories, data quality refers to the accuracy, reliability, and completeness of the data generated and managed within the laboratory setting. This tests whether the data that was gathered from the test results reflect the true values of the biological samples being analyzed, if repeated, measurements of the same sample under the same conditions yield similar results, and if the data gathered includes all relevant information.
High data quality is a must for clinical laboratories, especially when diagnoses and treatments depend on the information that will be generated from the processed data. -
