Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) happens when the major arteries in the heart are blocked or narrowed by plaque build-up. This causes a decrease in blood supply, ultimately weakening the heart. Complete blockage of an artery can lead to heart failure.
A person with CAD may experience angina, weakness, lightheadedness, nausea, cold sweat, pain or discomfort in the arms or shoulders, or shortness of breath. The risk factors of CAD are sex, age, obesity, family stress, high stress, and an unhealthy diet.
CAD may be caused by smoking, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, or a sedentary lifestyle. The patient’s physician may suggest lifestyle changes or offer medication to treat this disease. Medication for CAD includes aspirin, beta-blockers, ranolazine, and calcium channel blockers.
