The kidney’s basic functional unit, the nephron, performs the vital functions of producing urine and filtering blood. The glomerulus, a system of microscopic blood arteries, and the Bowman’s capsule, which encloses the glomerulus and gathers the first filtrate, are the first components of the nephron, which also includes the renal corpuscle and renal tubule. Through these complex processes, the nephron contributes considerably to overall kidney function and the body’s internal homeostasis by controlling electrolyte concentration, preserving water balance, and removing waste products.
