THE URINARY SYSTEM
Irene Gin B. Ojastro
MT 13 – LEC GHThe urinary system, also known as the excretory system, plays a crucial role in maintaining the body’s internal environment by eliminating waste products and regulating fluid and electrolyte balance. It consists of the kidneys, ureters, urinary bladder, and urethra.
However, the urinary system can not function without the presence of nephrons. Nephrons are the functional units of the kidneys, and their primary role is to filter blood, reabsorb essential substances, and excrete waste products to form urine. Without functional nephrons, the kidneys would be unable to perform these vital processes, leading to a breakdown in the urinary system’s ability to maintain proper fluid and electrolyte balance and eliminate waste products from the body.
In summary, the urinary system, with its intricate nephron units, is indispensable for maintaining the body’s balance by filtering blood, regulating fluid and electrolytes, and eliminating waste through urine. This crucial system ensures not only excretion but also active participation in overall physiological equilibrium.
