Information privacy, or data privacy, refers to the management of data, technology, expectations of privacy, and the legal and political concerns that surround them.

Republic Act No. 10173, also referred to as the Data Privacy Act of 2012 (DPA), is a law that aims to safeguard personal data in information and communications systems, both in the government and the private sector. The DPA established the National Privacy Commission (NPC) with the responsibility of overseeing its implementation. It covers the handling of personal information and sensitive personal information and requires direct consent from the data subject as a basic requirement before any processing of personal information can take place.
