Striated muscle, also known as skeletal muscle, plays a crucial role in our bodies by enabling voluntary movements such as walking and lifting. These muscles are essential for mobility and are under conscious control, making them different from other muscle types. The name is derived from the visible striped pattern viewed under a microscope. This muscle comprises elongated, cylindrical fibers with multiple nuclei in each. The fibers are arranged into bundles and anchored to bones by tendons. The striated muscle comprises smaller units called myofibrils, which contain contractile units known as sarcomeres. Sarcomeres are made up of overlapping thin (actin) and thick (myosin) filaments arranged in a repetitive pattern. When stimulated by signals from the nervous system, these filaments slide past each other, resulting in muscle contraction and movement. Striated muscle is also voluntarily controlled, allowing individuals to consciously move it.
