    4 Basic Tissue Types
The four basic tissue types include epithelial, connective, muscle, and nervous tissue. Epithelial tissues are large sheets of cells and functions to cover such as the skin and the linings of the various passages inside the body. Connective tissue provides support and protection for organs and other tissues and binds them together like bone, blood, and lymph tissues. All forms of connective tissue are composed of extracellular fibres, an amorphous matrix called ground substance, and stationary and migrating cells. Muscle tissue facilitates movement by generating force. It includes skeleton muscles being elongated and cylindrical with a striped or striated appearance, responsible for skeletal movement, while smooth muscles are spindle shaped, containing a single nucleus located centrally and lacking striations, surrounding organs like the stomach. And lastly, nervous tissue which is made up of nerve cells (neurons), each characterized by an axon which are long stem-like projections emerging out of the cell, communicates and carry “messages” through electrical signals to and from various parts of the body.
