The Nervous System
The nervous system can be considered as the control system of the body as it is embedded with different nerves that allow communication among the different parts of the body to occur simultaneously. The nervous system uses electrical impulses to facilitate this communication. These electrical impulses are rapid and specific so that we may respond to external stimuli right away or immediately. The nervous system is an essential system that regulates and maintains the homeostasis of our body allowing it to function normally. Additionally, it works in tandem with the endocrine system so homeostasis can be maintained and sustained. The nervous system controls our body through the usage of rapid electrical impulses, whereas the endocrine system releases hormones.
Overall, the nervous system has three different functions. 1.) Sensory Input which is the process of gathering information from the different stimuli we encounter both inside and outside the body. 2.) Integration which is the processing and interpretation of the sensory inputs wherein it decides which course of action it should take in response to the input. 3.) Motor Output which pertains to the actual response that the nervous system makes in response to the sensory output that it has received wherein responses are done through the activation of muscles or glands.
