    Histology of Circulatory System

The circulatory system pumps blood throughout the body. It consists of the heart which pumps blood; the many blood vessels which deliver oxygenated blood to our different organs, muscles, and tissues and bring deoxygenated blood back to the heart; and blood which brings oxygen and other nutrients to the different parts of the body that need them. Because of their function, blood vessels (except capillaries) consist of three layers: tunica intima, tunica media, and tunica adventitia. Additionally, the circulatory system only has one layer of muscle in contrast to the gastrointestinal tract which has two or three layers.
