A type of muscle tissue that forms the heart and only exists in the heart is known as the cardiac muscle, also called the myocardium. It is one of the various types of muscle tissue that keeps the blood flowing throughout the body and the heart pumping. It contracts enough force and enough blood to supply the needs of the entire body, and it performs involuntarily.

While some cardiac muscles have two nuclei,others only have one. It appears striated or striped due to alternating filaments that comprise myosin (dark stripes that have thick filaments) and actin proteins (lighter and thinner filaments).

One unique feature is the presence of intercalated discs, which connect the cardiac muscle cells. Inside the intercalated discs are gap junctions, which relay electrical impulses from one cardiac muscle to another.
Cardiac muscle tissue dies when the heart’s oxygen demand exceeds the oxygen supply.
