Laboratory Activity #4: Viewing of Muscular and Nervous Tissues
    ____________________________________________________________________
Muscular Tissue | Mammal Striated Muscle, c.s.

Structure: Composed of elongated, cylindrical cells with visible striations (banding) due to the arrangement of contractile proteins actin and myosin. When viewed in a cross-section (c.s.), these striations give the tissue a striped appearance.

Function: Enables voluntary, powerful contractions for skeletal movement. These muscles are attached to bones and allow for controlled movements like walking, running, and lifting objects.

Location: Found throughout the body, attached to bones.

    ____________________________________________________________________
Nervous Tissue | Cerebrum Ag Stain, section

Structure: Composed of grey matter (cell bodies, dendrites, and unmyelinated axons) and white matter (myelinated axons). An Ag stain specifically highlights neural processes like axons and dendrites due to their high silver content.

Function: Involved in higher-order functions like consciousness, thought, memory, and sensory perception. The cerebrum is the largest part of the brain and is responsible for these complex cognitive abilities.

Location: The uppermost portion of the brain.
