Laboratory Activity: The Digestive System (2 out of 4 examined slides)–
📝 Name of Specimen: Human Tongue Posterior, c.s.
🔬 Objective/s Used: Scanner, Low-Power, High-Power Objectives
📚 Description: Our tongue, the human tongue, is a muscle with striae that can be found on the floor of our mouths. It performs an important job concerning the oral cavity. More to it, as it is composed of a dorsal mucosal surface, it houses many taste buds and the papillae which help in the perception of flavor, for example, when we eat (du Toit, 2003). The human tongue, as a muscle organ, can perform various actions other than tasting, such as speaking, offering ease for swallowing, and even anchoring the food that we eat when it utilizes voluntary control. Therefore, the human tongue is no doubt an important structure in our body system when talking about digestion and communication.–
📝 Name of Specimen: Human Esophagus, upper region sect.
🔬 Objective/s Used: Scanner, Low-Power, High-Power Objectives
📚 Description: When talking about the esophagus, it is an element in the digestive system that is responsible for the transportation of food, be it solid or liquid, from the throat down to the stomach (Cleveland Clinic, 2021). With the aid of peristalsis, a series of coordinated muscle contractions, the food that has been swallowed is conveyed downward the muscular walls. Moreover, as the human esophagus portrays that of a simple shape, it does perform a critical function in the process of digestion for it guarantees that food will be delivered to the stomach for grinding. Such that, examining the esophagus is of significance toward underscoring the complex makeup of the body.–
