Laboratory Activity #7: Reviewing of Digestive Tissues
____________________________________________________________
EPIGLOTTIS | DIGESTIVE SYSTEM TISSUE
๐ Structure: The epiglottis appears small and leaf-shaped and is composed of a layer of elastic cartilage. The base and sides of the epiglottis is anchored by a combination of ligaments, muscles, and mucosa. The top portion of the epiglottis is loose and is able to move.
๐ Function: The epiglottis protects the larynx or voicebox, thus ensuring safety during breathing. It aids in swallowing, keeping food and liquid from entering the respiratory system. In the act of swallowing, the epiglottisโ โfree endโ flips upward to push food and/or liquid away from the larynx and esophagus.
๐ Location: It is located behind the tongue, as well as above and in front of the larynx.
