The images below shows the parts of the small intestine of the digestive system which are the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum; while the large intestine starts with the caecum (Lumen Learning, 2024).
The duodenum acts as the initial and the shortest part of the small intestine. It gets the partially digested food from the stomach and secretions which are coming from the pancreas (and they contain digestive enzymes), helping digestion a lot (Lumen Learning, 2024).
The jejunum is the middle area of the small intestine, with ridges and villi for greater absorption surface increasing beyond the duodenum which digested the food in enzymatic processes (Lumen Learning, 2024).
The ileum with its length of around 1.8 meters (about 6 feet), is the longest component in the small intestine. The walls of the duodenum are thicker, more vascular, and have a higher degree of the mucosal folds than the jejenum. The ileum ends to the start of the large intestine – the cecum – at the ileocecal sphincter or valve (Lumen Learning, 2024).
The caecum is the first component of the large intestine where the ileum connects with the large intestines (Lumen Learning, 2024).
