Activity 2C: Muscle Tissues
The cardiac muscle, which is in the walls of the heart and is in charge for the pushing of blood all throughout the body. It is striated (striped-pattern) and the contraction of this muscle isn’t voluntary and is controlled by the autonomic nervous system. The cardiac muscles, cardiomyocytes, are rectangular and have a single nucleus placed in the center.
The skeletal muscles, or striated muscles are, by far, the most common muscles and they are attached to the bones. They are responsible for the voluntary movements which include walking, facial expressions, and maintaining posture. The muscle fibres have their nuclei at the cell membrane and are longer and cylindrical. A skeletal muscle is, for example, the one on the tongue, which consists of striated muscle fibers for speech and swallowing.
Finally, there are the smooth muscles which are present in places such as the intestines’ walls, blood vessels, and uterus. These smooth muscle cells are spindle-shaped, have no striations, and have an only centrally located nucleus. It is involuntary and controlled by the autonomic nervous system, which controls smooth muscle contractions, organizes digestion, blood flow regulation and the uterine contractions during childbirth.
