REVIEW: Digestive System
The large intestine, which ends in eliminating waste, starts from the Ileocaecal valve and is not equipped with folds and villi. Instead, they possess Lieberkühn’s crypts and goblet cells for absorption and mucus production. It includes a cell-rich lamina propria which has lymph follicles and goes further down into the rectum which is lined in stratified cuboidal and stratified squamous epithelium. The glands in the large intestine produce both mucus and sebum, while circular muscles form the internal anal sphincter. Moreover, there are fibromuscular strands which help with the contraction of the sphincter muscle in the rectum (Dudás, 2023).
