    Good Day, everyone!! Attached below is a picture of my Activity 4 (The Integumentary System). Included in this post are descriptions and some functions of the circulatory system posted.

    INTEGUMENTARY SYSTEM
    The integumentary system is the body’s outer layer, encompassing the skin, nails, hair, glands, and nerves. It serves as a protective barrier against bacteria, infection, injury, and sunlight while regulating body temperature and enabling sensations like hot and cold. The skin, the largest organ, consists of three layers: epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis, each with distinct functions such as providing color, insulation, and hosting glands. Nails protect the tips of fingers and toes, while hair helps retain body heat and guards the eyes. Glands release sweat, oil, and ear wax, and the system plays a key role in the immune response by providing the first line of defense against pathogens and aiding the healing process. It also aids in vitamin D synthesis, crucial for bone health (Cleveland Clinic, 2022).

    ––SKIN––

    The skin is the body’s largest organ, composed of water, protein, fats, and minerals. It acts as a protective barrier against germs, regulates body temperature, and enables sensations like hot and cold. The skin is part of the integumentary system, which includes hair, nails, and glands. It has three layers: the epidermis, the top layer that protects against external threats and produces new skin cells; the dermis, the middle layer that houses collagen and elastin for strength and flexibility, as well as hair follicles, nerves, and glands; and the hypodermis, the fatty bottom layer that cushions muscles and bones, regulates body temperature, and contains connective tissue. One inch of skin contains around 19 million skin cells, 60,000 melanocytes, 1,000 nerve endings, and 20 blood vessels (Cleveland Clinic, 2021).

    ––HAIR––

    Hair in mammals is a threadlike outgrowth from the epidermis that forms an animal’s coat. It serves as insulation to conserve body heat and can provide camouflage and aid in sexual recognition among species. Specialized hairs like vibrissae (whiskers) act as sensory organs for nocturnal animals, while modified hairs like porcupine quills are defensive. Human beings have different types of hair, starting with lanugo in fetal life, followed by down hair (vellus) in infancy, and then terminal hair during puberty. Hair on the scalp, eyebrows, and eyelashes develops early, with the scalp hosting between 100,000 and 150,000 hairs that grow at a rate of 0.5 inches per month. Hair consists of a shaft and a root within a follicle, composed mostly of keratin. Hair follows a cycle of growth, rest, fallout, and renewal, with varying lifespans depending on the type of hair, from a few months for downy hair to three to five years for scalp hair. This process occurs independently across follicles, keeping the total amount of hair constant (Britannica, 2024).

    ––SCALP––

    The scalp covers the cranial vault and consists of five layers: Skin, Dense Connective Tissue, Epicranial Aponeurosis, Loose Areolar Connective Tissue, and Periosteum, remembered using the mnemonic ‘SCALP.’ The skin contains hair follicles and sebaceous glands, while the dense connective tissue binds the skin to the epicranial aponeurosis and is richly vascularized. The epicranial aponeurosis connects the occipitalis and frontalis muscles. The loose areolar connective tissue separates the periosteum of the skull from the epicranial aponeurosis and includes blood vessels and emissary veins. The periosteum is the outer layer of the skull bones and becomes continuous with the endosteum at suture lines. The scalp’s vascular nature can lead to profuse bleeding if injured (Hunt, 2020).
