Activity 3 (The Circulatory System)
The circulatory system, also known as the cardiovascular system, circulates blood from the heart to the lungs for oxygenation. The heart pumps the oxygen-rich blood through arteries to the entire body. Veins return oxygen-depleted blood back to the heart to restart the cycle.
1. Artery – they carry oxygen-rich blood from the heart throughout the body. The aorta, the largest artery, extends from the heart through the chest and abdomen. Coronary arteries branch off from the aorta and divide into smaller arterioles.
2. Vein AND 4. Vena Cava – Veins return oxygen-depleted blood to the heart, starting as small venules and getting larger. The superior vena cava brings blood from the upper body, while the inferior vena cava carries blood from the lower body. Veins in the legs have valves to prevent backflow.
3. Human Spleen – The spleen is located above the stomach in the left rib cage. It stores and filters blood, and produces white blood cells to fight infection.Sources:
