Muscle tissue is characterized by the ability to contract resulting from the sliding interaction of myosin filaments along actin filaments (Mescher, 2021). They generally function in the movement of the body.

There are three types of muscle tissue, namely:
1. Skeletal muscle – These muscles have striated and multi-nucleated cells, and the contraction and relaxation of these muscles are within our voluntary control. They can be found on our limbs, face, and other body parts that we can move.
2. Cardiac muscle – These are composed of mono-nucleated cells. Their movement is involuntary and rhythmic. They can only be found in the heart.
3. Smooth muscle – These muscles have mono-nucleated cells that have slow and involuntary contractions. They are found on the walls of hollow organs.
