The circulatory system refers to the circulation of blood throughout the entire body. It is composed of the heart, blood vessels, and the blood that they transport. The heart pumps blood to all parts of the body delivering the necessary gases and nutrients.

The blood vessels have two kinds: the arteries and veins. The arteries transport oxygenated blood from the heart to the body, while the veins transport deoxygenated blood from the body back to the heart. Between those vessels are the capillaries where the exchange of gases occurs. In the journey towards the lungs, however, it is somewhat the opposite. The pulmonary veins deliver oxygenated blood back to the heart while pulmonary arteries deliver deoxygenated blood to the lungs where it gets oxygen from the alveoli.
