The nephron is the functional unit of the kidney, responsible for filtering blood, reabsorbing useful substances, and excreting waste products as urine. It consists of a renal corpuscle, which filters blood, and a renal tubule, which processes the filtered fluid.

The renal corpuscle is composed of a glomerulus, a tuft of capillaries, and Bowman’s capsule, which surrounds the glomerulus. As the filtrate passes through the renal tubule, its composition is altered by secretion and reabsorption of substances.

The final product, urine, is conveyed through collecting ducts to the renal pelvis and bladder for excretion.
