Laboratory Activity: The Reproductive System
–
📝 Name of Specimen: Human Epididymis
🔬 Objective/s Used: Low-Power Objective
📚 Description: The human epididymis is referred to being made up of a highly coiled tube comprising three sections which are the head, body, and tail (Boskey, 2024). In the male reproductive system, it can be found within the scrotum, and is closely attached to the posterior surface of each testis. More to it, sperms mature in the epididymis once they are stored in the tail section after they have moved out from the testes.📝 Name of Specimen: Human Sperm Smear
🔬 Objective/s Used: Scanner
📚 Description: Sperm, in humans, is a specialized reproductive cell found in the seminiferous tubules of the testicles. According to Crna (2020), the sperm is made up of a head that contains the genetic material, a midpiece which constitutes mitochondria that gives off energy, and a tail that helps propel the sperm forwards. Statistically, many sperms are made every day, yet only one is needed to fertilize an egg to enable a new organism to develop.📝 Name of Specimen: Testis Human
🔬 Objective/s Used: High-Power Objective
📚 Description: The testes, or the testicles are oval-shaped glands that are usually found within the scrotum and are vital to the health of the male reproductive system since they are responsible in producing and holding onto sperm until they reach maturity and are set for ejaculation (Jewell, 2018). Aside from this, the testes is also performing a job in secreting testosterone that is important for the development of males’ secondary sexual traits.📝 Name of Specimen: Vas Deferens
🔬 Objective/s Used: Low-Power Objective
📚 Description: Mature sperm pass from the epididymis to the pelvic cavity by a long, muscular tube called the vas deferens, sometimes referred to as the ductus deferens or sperm duct (Cleveland Clinic, n.d.). It goes behind the bladder and uses the ejaculatory duct to combine with the urethra. Also, it cannot be denied that the vas deferens is an essential part of the reproductive system since it directs sperm toward the urethra in advance of ejaculation.References:
