NEPHRONThe nephron is the functional unit of the kidney. It filters waste and excess water from the blood, mainly for filtration and reabsorption.
Initially, filtration occurs within the glomerulus, wherein blood pressure forces plasma through a delicate membrane, leaving cells and large molecules behind. On the other hand, fluids and wastes become what we know as filtrate.
Moving on, the renal tubule selectively reabsorbs essential nutrients and water back into the bloodstream while waste and excess products stay behind as urine, which is eventually excreted outside the body.
Thus, these processes are essential in maintaining blood pressure, electrolyte balance, and overall health.
