This artwork uses a school setting to explain how a cell functions. Comparing the cell’s parts to elements of a school, such as the plasma membrane to a school fence and the nucleus to the principal’s office, highlights the cell’s structure. For instance, ribosomes are depicted as students at desks in the rough ER hallways, doing their “homework” (making proteins), to emphasize their role in protein synthesis. Other essential cell components, like the Golgi apparatus, mitochondria, and lysosomes, are also portrayed as recognizable parts of a school, helping in understanding how a cell utilizes energy and materials and manages waste, similar to how a school manages its resources and students. This comparison simplifies the understanding of how cells function and relates to our daily experiences.
