MT 13 – GH 1 year, 5 months ago Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is a chronic condition where stomach acid flows back into the esophagus, leading to symptoms such as heartburn, regurgitation, and difficulty swallowing. It occurs when the lower esophageal sphincter weakens or relaxes inappropriately, allowing acid to escape from the stomach.
Common triggers include certain foods, obesity, smoking, and pregnancy. Treatment often involves lifestyle changes, dietary modifications, over-the-counter antacids, and prescription medications to reduce acid production. In severe cases, surgery may be considered. Long-term untreated GERD can lead to complications like esophagitis or Barrett’s esophagus.
