MT 13 – GH 1 year, 7 months ago Respiratory system ensures that the body has sufficient oxygen and removes carbon dioxide. I was surprised to see the way in which the lungs and respiratory muscles act to execute that. The complexity of this system, having each of its parts specialized in a given function, denotes the interconnection and vitality of the organs for life maintenance. Most of the time, we may not appreciate how much work our body does until one system fails.
I got to learn about the different types of respiratory failure and how each affects the body. For example, where carbon dioxide levels are high due to ventilatory failure, they tend to be low in lung failure as oxygen levels plummet. This knowledge gave me insight into how diseases or conditions that affect the lungs may strain the respiratory muscles and make breathing more problematic. Highlighting those mechanisms makes lung health important, noticing what the body says when something feels wrong.
