“Overview of Kidney Function: The Role of the Nephron in Filtration, Reabsorption, and Waste Excretion”

The kidney’s functional unit is known as nephron. It filters blood, reabsorbs essential substances, secretes waste, and produces urine.

Blood enters the nephron through the afferent arteriole into the glomerulus, where filtration takes place. Water, ions, and small molecules pass into the Bowman’s capsule, while larger components like proteins and blood cells remain in the bloodstream. The filtrate then flows into the proximal tubule, where reabsorption of glucose, water, and ions like sodium occurs, along with the secretion of waste products such as hydrogen ions.

It continues to the Loop of Henle, where the descending limb reabsorbs water, concentrating the filtrate, and the ascending limb reabsorbs ions, diluting it. In the distal tubule, the filtrate is further refined as ion and water levels are adjusted under hormonal regulation.

Finally, the filtrate moves to the collecting duct, where water reabsorption is regulated by antidiuretic hormone (ADH), and the remaining waste is excreted as urine. This process ensures the body removes waste while maintaining essential balances of water, electrolytes, and nutrients.
