MT 30 – AAReflections on 9 articles and powerpoints
[Article: Why is histology essential?]
I agree with the author. The study of tissues helps in understanding not only the function and structure of tissues but also diseases that might affect that specific tissue and how to treat them. I strongly think that histology is not only important but necessary. Without it, we would not be able to effectively make sense of certain diseases. Without histology, we would not be able to get a complete picture of what is going on inside our bodies.
[Article: What is medical histology?]
Medical histology pertains to the study of tissues from a morphological and molecular standpoint. Medical histology put clinical significance on tissues and their structure and function, factoring in their role in the emergence and resolution of certain diseases. In short, medical histology views human tissues through the lenses of human illness, injuries, treatment, and prevention.
[Article: What is the most considerable cell of the human body?]
Having a diameter of 120 micrometers, the female ovum is the largest cell in the human body. In this size, it can be viewed by the naked eye and without the assistance of a microscope. Its size relates to its function as it needs to gather as much nutrients as possible to support the growth and development of the embryo after fertilization.
[Powerpoint: Cell theory]
The cell theory is a product of several groundbreaking discoveries by numerous scientists in the past. It serves as the foundation of our understanding of biology and how the human body functions. The cell theory primarily states that cells come from preexisting cells, organisms are made up of cells, and cells exist as the smallest living unit of the human body.
[Article: What are DNA and genes?]
DNA, or deoxyribonucleic acid, is an integral part of our heredity as it dictates the functions and activities of our cells, how we look, and what traits we manifest. Such genetic material is located in the cell’s nucleus. DNA contains genes, and such genes are expressed and transcribed to RNA. From there, they can be translated into proteins.
[Article: What is RNA and what is its function?]
RNA, or ribonucleic acid, plays a significant role in the synthesis of proteins inside our body. It is the photocopy or transcript or RNA. Once produced, it can be translated into proteins. Furthermore, DNA can have many types. They can be mRNA, rRNA, or tRNA, among others. RNA, certainly, is an important aspect not only in the understanding of the central dogma but also in human growth and development.
[Article: Why is the ribosome so necessary?]
The ribosome is an essential organelle inside the body. It is made inside the nucleolus from a complex protein and ribosomal RNA (rRNA). Furthermore, its primary function is to synthesize proteins necessary for growth and metabolism. These organelles are often seen lodged at the outer membrane of the endoplasmic reticulum or floating around the cytoplasm of the cell.
[Powerpoint: Epithelial tissue]
Epithelial tissues are among the 4 classes of tissues that exist as part of the human body. They function by providing physical protection, selective permeability, ability to sense changes in the environment, and ability to secrete substances. Furthermore, such tissues are classified depending on the number of layers (simple, stratified, or pseudostratified) or their shape (squamous, cuboidal, columnar, or transitional). They can be found all over the body.
[Article: What is the structure and function of the organs of the urinary system?]
An important organ in the urinary system are the kidneys. They are bean-shaped structures that primarily filters human blood and produce urine. Furthermore, the kidneys also control the production of red blood cells and produces the hormone renin, which regulates the body’s blood pressure. Nephrons serve as the functional units of the kidney, making up the kidney and responsible for removing waste.
