THE NEPHRON
The nephron filters blood to remove waste and excess substances, reabsorbs essential nutrients and water, and adjusts the urine concentration based on the body’s needs, ultimately producing urine that is excreted from the body. How does the blood flow through the nephron?
Blood enters through the afferent arteriole and flows into the glomerulus. Filtration occurs due to pressure differences, with water, ions, and small molecules passing through the glomerular capillaries into Bowman’s capsule. The blood leaves through the glomerulus through the efferent arteriole and helps regulate blood pressure and flow.
