The areolar tissue contains much ground substance with cells and a little amount of collagen that are randomly distributed. It functions as a support for microvasculature, nerves, and immune defense cells.

The elastic cartilage contains an abundant network of elastic fibers and is more flexible as opposed to hyaline cartilage. It is found in areas such as the auricle of the ear and the walls of the external auditory canals providing flexible support and is surrounded by the perichondrium.
