It is a fundamental component of the nervous system, which includes the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves. The tissue is primarily composed of two types of cells: neurons and neuroglia. Neurons are the functional units responsible for carrying nerve impulses. Each neuron consists of a cell body, dendrites that receive signals, and a long axon that transmits impulses to other neurons or muscles. Supporting the neurons are neuroglial cells, which provide structural and metabolic support, maintain the environment around neurons, and help in the repair of nervous tissue. Nervous tissue is characterized by its excitability and conductivity, allowing it to detect changes in the environment (sensory input), process and interpret those changes (integration), and generate appropriate responses (motor output). Overall, nervous tissue is vital for communication, control, and coordination throughout the body, enabling both basic reflexes and complex cognitive functions.
