What is a fibroblast made up of?A fibroblast is a specialized connective tissue cell characterized by its spindle-shaped structure and active role in producing the extracellular matrix. Structurally, fibroblasts contain a prominent nucleus, abundant rough endoplasmic reticulum, and a well-developed Golgi apparatus, which reflect their function in protein synthesis. Rather than being “made up of” fibers themselves, fibroblasts synthesize and secrete collagen fibers, elastic fibers, and components of the ground substance such as proteoglycans and glycosaminoglycans. These products provide structural support and strength to connective tissues and are essential for tissue repair and wound healing.
