What is Fibroblast Made up Of?
Fibroblasts are the main cell type in connective tissue and are responsible for forming the body’s framework through the secretion of the extracellular matrix and collagen. They are made up of a branched cytoplasm and an elliptical nucleus. When they are actively secreting the protein, they are packed with rough endoplasmic reticulum and an apple-shaped Golgi body, which are the cellular inclusions required for high protein secretion.
Besides the cells found in connective tissue, another role of the fibroblast cell is to produce the necessary components of the tissue itself. These components include different forms of collagen, elastic fibers, and reticular fibers. They also produce ground substance. This is a gel-like substance consisting of water, glycosaminoglycans, and glycoproteins that fills the space between the fibers and cells.
