Power in Every Fiber: The Histology of a Volleyball Strike

This artwork highlights the role of skeletal muscle tissue during a moment in volleyball, showing how every movement in sports begins at the microscopic level. The volleyball is creatively formed from bundles of skeletal muscle fibers, with the visible lines representing the striations and the small oval shapes along the edges symbolizing the peripheral nuclei that are characteristic of this tissue. I wanted to show that when an athlete hits the ball, the real power doesn’t just come from the player, it comes from the countless muscle fibers contracting together to produce strength and movement. By turning the volleyball into muscle tissue, the piece represents the idea that the true “micro-athletes” are the cells themselves, working behind the scenes to make every motion on the court possible. 🏐💪
