SPONGY BONE

Spongy bone is one of the two kinds of bone (compact bone and spongy bone) which is part of the connective tissues. Spongy bone is also called cancellous or trabecular bone. It is consist of about 20% of the total bone mass.
It refers to the deeper areas with numerous interconnecting cavities.Spongy bone is softer and weaker than compact bone, but is also more flexible. It is strong but porous which can be seen even with unaided eyes and it uses this extra room to make and store BM. It is highly vascularized and contains red bone marrow. It is found in the heads of long bones and in the inner layer of flat bones. It is also found inside the vertebrae, in the ribs, in the skull and in the bones of the joints.
