    STEWARDS OF THE ENVIRONMENT.

Philippines was struck once again with a Super Typhoon with a wind speed of 259 km/hr – the strongest typhoon ever recorded in 2020. Super Typhoon Rolly has made a land fall in Catanduanes thereby greatly affecting the Bicol Region. It brought catastrophic winds and heavy rains causing the loose soil generated by quarrying at the foot of the Majestic Mt. Mayon wash astray. The massive lahar or mudflow devoured houses and villagers in Guinobatan, Albay.

Over the years, much has been regulated in order to reduce the impacts of quarrying, however Super Typhoon Rolly has proven otherwise. Quarrying is the process of extracting soil, rocks, sand, gravel and other natural resources to be used in construction and other infrastructure-related fields. This has been an environmental issue since then, because it brings negative impacts to our environment. It causes water pollution and land degradation, amongst many, which in turn leads to health-related problems especially to those living near the quarry site, and the loss of biodiversity caused by water pollution.

It is the nature of us, human beings, to make use of the resources around us. After all, God created everything that surrounds us for our consumption, but we have to be responsible enough when using them. We are the stewards of the environment; therefore we must make a move in order to prevent the destruction of our Mother Earth – not contribute to it. We hope that this happening in Guinobatan, Albay be an eye-opener to many quarry operators to be responsible in order to put an end to happenings such as this in the future.
