Did you know that GMO bacteria are used to produce insulin?
Insulin, the hormone released by the pancreas that lowers blood sugar levels in the human body can now be produced through Genetic Engineering.Genetically Modified Insulin is produced in the same way other GMO products are produced such as GMO corn starch and GMO sugar used in Cheerios.
The DNA sequence of human insulin is inserted into the bacteria E. coli, which develops an organism that now contains DNA from two distinct organisms. This new E. coli is a genetically modified organism (GMO) that functions as a low-priced factory for the mass production of human insulin proteins. The insulin produced from GM bacteria is cheaper than the insulin extracted from other mammals. After a while, the E. coli bacteria produce significant quantities of human protein to the point that it is possible to remove the protein from the cells of the bacteria and purify it before it is packaged in insulin shots. Moreover, this protein is also suitable for people who do not prefer eating certain meat due to their beliefs.
The insulin protein made through genetic engineering is chemically identical to the insulin protein made in a healthy human body. However, this protein is not totally the same as the insulin produced in the human body. Due to some distinction, this GM insulin cannot be utilized by some people who also need this protein.
