The reproductive system ensures the survival of the species. Other systems in the body, such as the endocrine and urinary systems, work continuously to maintain homeostasis for the survival of the individual. An individual may live a long, healthy, and happy life without producing offspring, but if the species is to continue, at least some individuals must produce offspring.

A stratified squamous epithelium with a minor degree of keratinization lines the vagina. A thick layer of dense connective tissue, similar to that found in the skin's dermis, lies beneath the epithelium. Following this is a layer of loose connective tissue with numerous blood vessels and nerves. Because they produce and store glycogen, vaginal wall cells typically have a large amount of cytoplasm.
