Connective Tissue - Bone Marrow Smear 400x
The hollow interiors of bones, especially spongy bone tissue, contain bone marrow, a specialized connective tissue. Hematopoiesis, or the creation of blood cells, is its main purpose. Red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets are produced by red bone marrow, which is abundant in hematopoietic stem cells. The immune system, blood coagulation, and oxygen transport all depend on these components of cells. Mostly made up of fat cells, yellow bone marrow can change into red marrow when necessary and acts as a repository of energy. In adults, yellow marrow is more common in the long bones, but red marrow is more common in the flat bones, such as the ribs, pelvis, and sternum.
