Significant advancements have been achieved in developing novel cancer immunotherapies in recent years. Targeted immunotherapies such as CAR T-cell therapy and antibody treatments have changed cancer treatment. However, discovering cancer cell surface proteins as immunotherapy targets remains a considerable difficulty. A study group from Lund University in Sweden is well on its way, and their findings have now been published in PNAS.
Immunotherapies have transformed cancer treatment and, in certain situations, offer the potential to cure patients with advanced illnesses. CAR T-cell and antibody immunotherapies both target particular target proteins expressed on the surface of tumor cells called cell surface tumor antigens.
He and his colleagues at Lund University and Skane University Hospital have created a novel precision medicine method that allows for thorough mapping of a patient’s whole cell surface tumor antigen landscape. The ‘Tumour Surfaceome Mapping, TS-MAP’ technology developed by the research team directly studies all accessible cell surface tumor antigens in patient tumor tissue. The researchers detected many cell surface tumor antigens in fresh tissue from patients with severe brain tumors. There is no viable treatment in a tight collaboration between neurosurgery, oncology, and advanced proteomics in Lund.
According to Mattias Belting, “clearly underline the possibility and necessity for tailored tactics based on the vast repertoire and variety of tumor antigens found in patient tumors.” The fact that the study is done on intact tissue is also relevant.Researchers develop new precision medicine technology for cancer immunotherapyIn recent years, great advances have been made in the development of new successful immunotherapies to treat cancer. CAR T-cell therapy and antibody treatments are two types of targeted immunotherapies that have revolutionized areas of cancer care.
