Muscle tissue is made up of cells that can shorten or contract to move the bodily components. The tissue is very cellular and blood vessel-rich. It is one of the body’s four major tissues. Skeletal muscle, cardiac muscle, and smooth muscle make up the body’s muscle tissue. Their plasma membranes can change electrical states (from polarized to depolarized) and send an electrical wave called an action potential along the membrane’s length. While the neural system can alter the excitability of cardiac and smooth muscle, skeletal muscle is totally dependent on nervous system signaling. However, cardiac and smooth muscles can respond to hormones and local stimuli.
