Activity 1: Reflection
There are four types of hazards we may be exposed to while working in histopathology laboratory. These includes chemical, biological, physical and electrical hazards. We should always be aware of the potential risks and treat all specimens as potentially infectious whenever we partake in laboratory work, especially in histotech labs. Because we work with various tissues from different individuals in the histopathology lab, which may carry harmful microorganisms, Additionally, we are exposed to a variety of chemicals, some of which may be corrosive, toxic, explosive, and flammable. Therefore, we need to be mindful of the risk and hazards whenever we enter a laboratory.
It is crucial for medical technologists and other healthcare workers to understand quality controls and preventive maintenance. Daily or routine inspections are also necessary when working with the lab’s equipment. When utilizing these tools, especially the microtome, it is extremely important to exercise extreme caution because of the sharp blades that could harm us or infect us.
We are also reminded of mislabeling, which we view as our mortal sin as medical technologists. The majority of us often just use this approach for patient identification and specimen sampling. But we must also adhere to proper labeling inside the lab, making sure that every piece of equipment has complete files with the name, manufacturer, model, and serial number.
Overall, based on the instructional video I’ve seen, I’m reminded to always read the instructions and learn and put into practice the basics, including wearing the correct PPE, properly washing my hands, understanding proper waste segregation, maintaining personal hygiene, and many more. Relearning what was taught in school and putting it to use in the workplace is very beneficial in preventing laboratory accidents and lowering risks.
