Both menstruation and fertilization are dependent on the ovaries. They generate the hormones estrogen and progesterone as well as eggs for fertilization. Ovulation occurs when an ovary produces an egg in the midst of the menstrual cycle (about day 14 of a 28-day cycle).

There are thousands of ovarian follicles in each ovary. Small sacs in the ovaries called ovarian follicles contain immature eggs. Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) stimulates follicles in one of the ovaries to mature once a month, between days six and fourteen of the menstrual cycle. A abrupt rise in luteinizing hormone (LH) prompts the ovary to produce an egg around day 14 of the menstrual cycle (ovulation).

The egg travels to the uterus through a small, hollow tube called the fallopian tube. Progesterone levels grow as the egg passes via the fallopian tube, helping to prepare the uterine lining for pregnancy.

The egg disintegrates and is reabsorbed by the body if the person does not become pregnant during that cycle, allowing menstruation to begin.
