The software that makes laboratory processes easier is the Laboratory Information Systems (LIS). This is being used in research to manage and simplify a lot of information to get better and faster results.

These software programs act as the digital foundation of medical information management. But, what is the main use of the Laboratory Information System (LIS)?

The Laboratory Information System (LIS) helps manage and organize lab data. It keeps track, saves, and updates the medical records of a patient for later use. Healthcare professionals use laboratory information systems to oversee medical procedures for patients in the hospital and those who come and go.

These digital systems determine which department the patient is being admitted to, which doctor will take care of them, and what kind of test they need. LIS also keeps track of patient info and test results as the samples are being processed.

LIS makes sure that all tests for each patient are being done the same way and that the results are accurate. The testing’s accuracy is also confirmed and examined again by authorized professionals. Additionally, it helps in maintaining the standard of laboratory tests.

There are no inconsistencies in the patients’ bills since the hospital charges patients right away when they come in, so there are no surprises in the bills later. This way, the hospital can keep running and make sure people don’t get free services.

Three different components must work together in unison for the LIS to work. They are sample tracking, protocol implementation, and storage management.

Sample tracking is one of the components because samples are very important in a laboratory. It means putting information like a code, the patient’s name, which department they’re going to in the hospital, what kind of sample it is when it was being taken, and how much there is into the computer.

Doing this digitally makes sure each sample goes to the right place for testing. Using a sample barcode helps us track the sample’s progress. The sample tracker aids in producing the brief results of all tests run on the sample in one document.
Another component of LIS is implementing protocols to improve how laboratories work. The system also helps in the creation of Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for doing tests and understanding the results by documenting every step.

Even when different people do the tests, the SOP helps keep everything the same. A secure process for performing high-quality tests is also provided by LIS, which also makes sure that only the right people can access it.

Managing sample storage is the final component of the Laboratory Information Systems. To store the sample for future use, organize the samples by batch number or date of collection. The batch is being put in the same container or shelf rack.

The system keeps an eye on where the organizer is being placed, not only on the shelf. In a busy laboratory, how we store samples matters for finding them and keeping things efficient.

In simple terms, a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) keeps track of a sample’s progress in the laboratory, from when it arrives until everything is being done. This includes storing the sample, testing it, reporting the results, and saving records.

The LIMS process starts when a sample is being brought into the lab and gets a special number. As the sample moves around the laboratory, important information is being added to the LIMS to keep a record of what happens.
