What are the characteristics of fibrous connective tissue?
Fibrous connective tissue, or dense connective tissue, is specified by its main function of support via a dense and organized pattern of collagen fibers. One of the main features that define fibrous connective tissue is the abundance of large type I collagen fibers; in fact, it is the main characteristic feature that distinguishes it from other forms of connective tissues. There are two types of organized fibrous connective tissues: dense regular connective tissue, which is composed of fibers that lie in a parallel pattern (as found in tendons and ligaments), which are optimized for unidirectional support; and dense irregular connective tissue, which is composed of interwoven fibers that lie in multiple planes (such a dermal layers and organ capsules), which are designed to resist a variety of directions. Fibrous connective tissue is relatively acellular and consists of fibroblasts that lie between the dense matrix of fibers.
