Primary health care covers a wide range of healthcare services like general practice, pharmacy, dentistry, family planning, disease prevention, treatment, and many more. It is an important aspect of health systems because it is the first line of healthcare services that most people would need to be able to live a quality life. It manages a huge part of our health which means primary health care should be cost-effective, accessible, and inclusive. PHC keeps people out of the hospital, however, in our country, primary health care is not accessible to all. It is not inclusive and it is certainly not cost-effective which is probably why hospitals (especially public hospitals) are always overwhelmed with patients. There is a lot of work that needs to be done before we can achieve a high-quality level of PHC, but as consumers, I think what we can do to help achieve this goal is to exercise our rights to quality healthcare services.
