    • There have been few to no studies on the atrial histology of individuals without cardiovascular disease. In this research, Li et al. (2019) investigated the atria of eight people who died of non-cardiac causes and were not known to have cardiovascular disease using atrial histology.

      The heart is a component of the circulatory system that helps the system function properly. As we all know, the circulatory system is made up of blood vessels that move blood away from and to the heart. Arteries carry blood away from the heart, whereas veins return blood to the heart. The heart is divided into four chambers: the right and left ventricle, which pump blood out of the heart, and the right and left atrium, which receives blood entering the heart. An abnormality in the atria may increase the likelihood of blood clotting. Furthermore, if a clot is pushed out of the heart, it can reach the brain, which causes stroke, or the lungs, which causes pulmonary embolism and other health concerns.

      This study investigated the right, left, and atrial septum histology of 8 patients (one newborn and seven adults) who died of non-cardiac causes. The atrial histology and histology of the left were compared from a series of glass slides. Left atrial histology indicated an abundance of adipocytes and interstitial fibrosis with replacement fibrosis in some cases and lymphocytic infiltrates in one, comparable to the histologic abnormalities of the right ventricle (RV) found in patients with arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy/dysplasia (ARVD). In addition, the researchers observed a perpendicular orientation of atrial myocardial fibers, which is likewise a characteristic of the thin RV-free wall. A similar histologic substrate to the RV myocardium, which is also found in ARVD, is also present in the atria of patients without overt cardiovascular disease (Li et al., 2019). This indicates that atrial fibrillation, a condition characterized by an irregular and frequently fast heart rhythm, may be prevalent in the general population.

      This study also shows the significance of histology, which not only assists in understanding the organization of cells and tissues but also enables the discovery of biomarkers that can detect the characteristics of a particular disease. This will also aid in developing treatments for a specific gene that may help prevent, if not eradicate, ailments such as the one described above that are unknown to us and even to scientists.
